What defines a duplicate field?

Featured Replies

I defined a text field to contain unique values. However, I expected that this would apply to the entire field, but it appears that if the first word in the field matches the first word in another field, that is considered to be a duplicate. How do I make the check apply to the entire field?

Take a look at the Exact Function cool.gif

I'll look into the exact function but ... for the record, here is what happened:

I defined the field requiring it to be not empty and to have a unique value.

Then I entered five rows, the third with a value of "another document" and the fifth with a value of "another test" and got a message that I had a duplicate value. I was actually attempting to test out a container field ... which is another story. (I've posted a message in the Container forum for that.)

However, now when I attempted to replicate it I am not getting the error. Strange.

Thanks

In the FileMaker help,

When determining uniqueness in text fields, FileMaker Pro looks at the first 100 characters in each field.

Hope that helps.

It is useful to know ... but that was not the case for me ... but, since I can't reproduce it, who knows what happened.

Thanks
