Newbies Red X bd Posted April 20, 2005 Newbies Posted April 20, 2005 Hi there, i'm wondering if any one can advice me on this subject. Some one told me that os x was enhaced for tcp/ip transactions and that fm 7 is also faster for the same issue, all of this compared to fm 5.5 and os 9.2.2. I have to develop a filemaker solution for a restaurant, i'm currently familiar with filemaker 5.5 pro, filemaker 5 server and filemaker 5 developer. I'm also currently using filemaker 5.5 pro and server 5 for a solution running under os 9.2.2 and have noticed that when in use of portal records in any file the transfers from client to server take too long. (server cube g4 @450 mhz , 768mb ram) (client pb g3 @400mhz bronze keyb with 386mb ram) for the restaurant proyect i want to know what would any of you advice, stay with os 9.2.2 and filemaker 5.5 and 5 server or jump to filemaker 7 pro, server 7 and os X? The solution will use about 400 records for the food options and each of those records contain portal records so each food plate will be detailed with its ingredients, also in the orders section of the solution all records address to portal records which will contain the detailed orders of the customers, making this a big mess if all of this clinets are connected to the server at the same time accesing portal records and creating new records of orders so my main concern will be system response to users to give a fast service for our customers. thanks for any advice and sorry if i'm not very ciherent right now, its late for me.... thx again
gdurniak Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 In a perfect world, I would say Wow! Use FM7, but FM7 has quirks of it's own If possible, try the FM7 demo for yourself. That's the only way to be sure. Overall, FM7 has less server / client chatter, so it should work better on a slow network, and will work over a WAN But, FM7 is slower elsewhere, like sub-summaries I'm surprised you have slow portals in FM6. This doesn't sound right, although a SORTED portal CAN be very slow. Try not sorting.
Newbies Red X bd Posted April 20, 2005 Author Newbies Posted April 20, 2005 hi there thx for your reply, not only sorting but summarizing too, so i can get subtotals based by product, how about osx? any ideas as for if it is faster for tpcip transactions vs os 9.2.2?
gdurniak Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 A few points Summarizing related data is just slow, period, on any version. It's NOT a network problem. Sorted portals will be slower as well Aside from this, overall, I have found FM6 to be slower on OS X. This may or may not be a network problem. But, it does appear that OS X Panther is better. Tiger is unknown. You will need to experiment on your own
Ender Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 For your network protocol, TCP/IP is faster than Appletalk.
