Newbies jaimielan Posted May 11, 2005 Newbies Posted May 11, 2005 Using FileMaker Pro 7 and I am stuck. I have just about everything like I want/need it to be in my database with this exception. I have a field named Category. In this field I have a lookup to a table that gives me a popup list where I can choose from my different budget categories i.e. 7104 Housing 7108 Transportation etc. In the look-up table there are only two fields, Number and Description. From my look up, the only info that is input into the Category field is the 7104. I also have a field named Cat. Description. I want the information from my lookup table to go there, but I want the Description to go there. It would look something like this: Category:7108 Category Description:Transportation Is there any way to reference the Category field and have FileMaker automatically put in the Description? I'm sorry if this has already been addressed on the forum but at this point, I don't even begin to know how to search on it! Any help would be appreciated.
Fenton Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 You seem to know about lookup tables, and use the word lookup; but you don't seem to have a relationship, which is what you need in FileMaker to make it work. To get the lookup to work all you need is a relationship between the Category field in one table to the Number field in the other (between the 2 numbers). This is done by drawing a line between the two field, in the two table occurrences on the Relationship Graph. Then define the Category Description field as a lookup, using the above relationship, looking up the Description field.
Newbies jaimielan Posted May 11, 2005 Author Newbies Posted May 11, 2005 Thanks for the quick reply. I knew it was simple. I already had the relationship there but I must have done something wrong. I destroyed the relationship and did it again, as you mentioned, and everything is fine now. Thanks
