Problem exporting email addresses into Mac Mail

I'm using an iBook G4 running Mac OX Jaguar Version 10.3.9.

I'm having a problem in sending group emails after creating a script using Filemaker Pro Help. After creating a group and then selecting send email - the email addresses are inadvertently DOUBLED in the Send To: area of the Mail application.

For example they all look like the following example:

[email protected] [email protected] (See attached jpeg)

In other words it puts the address in twice one after the other and they both are enclosed in brackets with NO spaces between both addresses.

The addresses cannot be separated to look like it should which would be

[email protected] for example.

If I try sending the email as is incorrectly addressed - it does not arrive to the sender. Does anyone know why this is happening and can provide a solution? Thank you.

Todd

Hi, Todd, thanks for re-posting.

I am still confused about the word "group": the only "group" concept I know of in FMP6 pertains to access privileges, not email. Do you mean you have set up a group in Mac Mail? If that's the case, do you see the same unwanted behavior when you try to use the email client directly (not involving Filemaker)?

Also, could you give us detail on the script steps you are using? How are you specifying the To: address (Field or Text)? And what is different about the Cc: line that makes it (apparently) work correctly?

Basically you can select a group of clients in a Filemaker database - all automobile companies for example - and send one email message to all of the them if you have their email addresses.

The steps for the script can be found in Filemaker Pro Help and I'm pretty sure that I've foolwed them precisely. Everything works up until the point that I am looking at the email message that I want to send and all of the addresses are doubled!!! Hope this helps.

As an example of what I trying to achieve I have attached a jpeg which show how these email addresses appear in the Apple Mail programs recipient window. I'm desperate for a solution as this functionality would be a huge asset to my business which is publishing.

I've found someone else experiencing the same problem and someone who has provided a kind of solution which I can't quite work out? Sorry Harryk!

you can select a group of clients in a Filemaker database

= "find a set of records?" As I mentioned before, I can find no reference to groups in FileMaker help except as pertains to access privileges, and the only reference to clients has to do with file sharing. Since your question involves multiple applications, it is important to use precise terminology, otherwise neither of us will know what the other is talking about.

The steps for the script can be found in Filemaker Pro Help and I'm pretty sure that I've foolwed them precisely

Can you tell us what those script steps are? Or perhaps post your file so we can look at it? Telling us that you think you've followed the steps correctly does not get us any closer to solving the problem if we don't know what those steps are!!!

So I will ask again: How are you specifying the To: address (Field or Text)? And what is different about the Cc: line that makes it (apparently) work correctly?

The key question here is: How are you specifying the To: address (Field or Text)?

Okay let's try this. Forget about my use of the words "group" and "clients" for now, but just so that you will know what I was trying to explain by using those words I offer this explanation:

By "clients" I meant my customers (clients therefore equal names and addreses of people in my database) and "groups" would thus be referring to all "customers or :clients" in my database who are in a particular industry ie: the fashion industry ("group" of fashion industry folk) or customers who are in the automobile industry thus a ("group" of automobile industry folk)! This is terminology that I'm using and don't refer to anything in Filemaker Pro Help. I hope that clears tha up and sorry if I've confused anyone.

Therefore when I want to send a single message to several people for example everyone in the fashion industry I would do a search in my database using the "industry field" for example and find say 150 customers in the fashion industry. Then having used ScriptMaker I can now just click a button which I have created and all 150 email addresses (which I had previously entered into a "FIELD" in the database called "email address") would appear in a new email (Apple Mac application) ready to be sent out to this particular "group" of people.

The problem remains however that each email address appears double or twice as per my previous attachment and previous expalnations in earlier postings. Apparently the reason the particular email address which appears in the cc: (which is my own eamil address) is entered correctly is because it has previously been entered into my "address book" in Mail (acording to harryk's explanation in a seperate posting in this forum).

I've attached the script instuction which I found in FileMaker Pro Help which I followed to create the script I've used.

Regards

Todd

What are the contents of your email address field? Is it just the address, with no brackets?

I have attached a file which should demonstrate how this step is meant to work. It works nicely on my system, using Thunderbird. If it does not work on yours, I would suspect Mac Mail as the reason for the problem.

If your address field is clean, try checking the address book in Mac Mail. The behavior you're seeing makes me wonder if you have a bunch of entries in the address book where the name and address are both .

Hey guys doing a search for MY problem I came here. I'm having similar issues but with Entourage. I downloaded the file J. attached and everything works fine.

It doesn't work for my files though. ??

My issue is... when perfoming a "send mail" script, Entourage opens up or comes to the front like it's "trying" but nothing goes beyond that. I have a couple of different files that I'd like to send mail to. One has approx. 5,000 people and the other has about 3 - 400. I have a "split recipients" script in Entourage in order to compensate for Verizon not letting me email more than so many per day. But I cant get the email to come up.

Could someone help or point me in a direction??

Thanks,

R.

I have a related question, that may belong here or somewhere else, apologies if this is the wrong place.

Is it possible to send out a customised email individually to each found record. E.g. in my membership database I currently do a find for members who are due for renewal, and then merge their details into a form (letter) and print them to post out as renewal reminders.

I want a script to (a) find those due for renewal (I already have this) (??? create an inidvidual email message (in Entourage) for each record © merge the form/letter either into the text of or an attachment to the mail, customised with their details.

Any ideas on how to do this? And how can I make it send the mails rather than queue them. I downloaded the attached script for Thunderbird but I couldn't read the script.
