I have a text field and I want to force the user to enter 8 characters in. No less. No more. How do I proceed?

Use the validation option in the field definition.

Validation by formula:

lenght(textfield)=8

Only in FMP 5.5 -- not available in anything earlier. For these versions you could try validating by the calculation Length(fieldname) = 8.
