May 30, 200520 yr How can I get FMP7 to send an email through Outlook 2003 (via exchange server 2003)? My script creates the message, addresses it properly but I cannot SEND the message from outlook. Seems like an Outlook security issue (thinks it is a virus or worm creating the message). I have posted on MS support groups too, but figured one of you must have beat this by now. The send button can be pushed but it won't do anything. If I create the same message from withing outlook, it works fine. It does not like the fact that FM is creating the email for me. Any ideas?
May 30, 200520 yr Author I have tried the OPEN URL script and spawned a new email via mailto:[email protected] and IT WORKS. I just can't add subject and text that way though. There is something up with the sendemail call that outlook does not like. Am I the only one with this issue?
May 31, 200520 yr Hi Bill, I'm using Outlook '03 and Exchange and as far as I know there is not a way to make Outlook actually send the message. Compose yes. Compose and send, no. Obviously there are risks involved in letting one application control another and Microsoft mitigated the risk by forcing human intervention when a program like FM is trying to send a message via Outlook. As far as I know, there is no way to circumvent this behavior. The only way we found to get around the problem was to revert back to a much older version of Outlook that allows messages to be sent. As for the mailto method, You can add the subject to the mailto with a syntax like this: mailto:[email protected]?subject=The%20Message%20Subject (replace any spaces with a %20) You might also consider a 3rd party emailing plug-in for FileMaker. I'm generally against using plugins but I have been using SMTPit from CNS and it works like a champ. It gives you much greater control over all aspects of emailing.
May 31, 200520 yr Author I got it to work once in while by using the outlook security editor and going through all those steps to open up simple mapi calls but it does not seem to work consitently. I will try that plugin since I need my DB to email reports. Thanks
June 1, 200520 yr Author Thanks for your thoughts on this. MS Security is to blame. There is another plugin that seems to do this too called Outlook Manipulator from Productive Computing. I will have to try the plugin you suggested too. I can't use another mail client since our whole office uses Outlook for its other features too. Hope this helps others.
