SXSW Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Does anyone know if there is a way to set accounts and privileges accross multiple files without having to key in the same set to every file? I assumed there was a way to do this and have been unable to do so, if not there should be it would save me a huge amount of time...help... anyone?
Fenton Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Here is a sample file I made for scripting Account creation and deletion across files: http://www.fmforums.com/threads/download.php?Number=112911 There are scripts in a central "accounts" file, to call the creation in other files. Each other file needs a set of a few scripts to handle creation and deletion of accounts. The scripts are the same in each file. All you need is an identical Table Occurrence of the central file in the Relationship Graph. Do that first, then import the scripts; there should be no errors. You must consider that Accounts are one thing, and Privileges are something else. They work together, but they are not the same thing. While you can script the creation of an Account, and assign an existing Privilege Set, you cannot script the creation or modification of Privilege Sets. You can only attach one to an Account at creation of that account. A Privilege Set must be created and modified for a specific file. It is a detailed specification of what exactly you can or cannot do in every part of that file. That is why it cannot be scripted; it must be done in each file separately. Of course, once you've done a full set in one file, the same Privilege Sets in another table will be quite similar (and they should really be named the same if you want to script Account creation). But sometimes not. In most cases a few tweaks is all you need. In any case you should have only a few different privilege sets, well thought out and consistent. Then it's not a huge problem. It's the Accounts that may be numerous and changeable.
