swf Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 I am setting up a dedicated filemaker server machine to be attached to a windows 2003 network. Plan is to host 5-7 filemaker pro clients directly attached to the office network. I plan to use a dedicated machine with windows xp pro. Sample setup to have 512 MB Ram, 2 40G harddrive, network card, CD Rom. I plan to setup up static IP on the network and turn off file sharing on the dedicated filemaker machine. Can I run the filemaker server and host the files on hardrive 1 and backup with automatic backups to harddrive 2. Or should I back up differently such as tape drive or cd. comments appreciated. Thanks
stanley Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 SWF: A couple of my clients have servers similar to yours; in a two-drive server setup, I recommend backing up to the second drive regularly (i.e., daily at least), burning to CD on at least a weekly basis, and also backing up to an external volume, usually a FireWire device or some other removable media. For example: Backup A: to second internal drive, Folder A, Mon, Wed, Fri. Backup B: to second internal drive, Folder B, Tues, Thurs, Sat. Backup C: to second internal drive, Folder C, Sunday. Backup D: to external drive, Folder D, Sat. Backub E: to external drive, Folder E, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri. On Mondays: Burn Folder C to CD. -Stanley
