Hi all, I have a small problem with printing layouts in preview mode where I have few portals, and other fields spanning multiple pages. The main problem is where I use sliding so portals and text fields slide up when there is no data to fill it. The problem is with page boudries, as fields slide up and cross the page boundry they are not being split up properly.

What I mean is I see duplicate data from the first page on the second page, almost bottom 1/3 of what is on first page is repeated on top of the 2nd page and so on.

Does anyone know that this is a bug? FM Tech support made me feel like it is me, but I can reporduce the problem on a brand new blank db with just few long fields that cross page boudries and have sliding turned on. If it is me and not FM 7v3 that I am running then can you suggest a fix?

Thanks,

Hi Hec, and Welcome to the Forums,

IF you were to do a search of All Forums using your keywords [color:"blue"] +Portal +Print +Layout (Include the plus signs), you would receive 200 hits, the maximum that the Search Engine will return. If you were to read though them, I doubt that you would find one recommendation to use Portals in a report.

Portals are great for viewing data of a Related Record in your current file, but are too inflexible for use in a report. Your control over how the data is presented is limited to how the Relationship and Portal are set up. If you want to see 10 lines, then this what you will see and be able to print (Portals don't expand or shrink), so if you choose 100 records to show, you will always see a 100 lines on your layout. They have no ability to break over pages as you have described. Create your report in the Related file, using normal fields and make your task easier.

The problem appears to be with text fields, and any other fields other then portals as well. I did a simple test db, brand new w/8 text fields, and same problem. Sliding up does not work very well when it comes to page margins and fields overlaping from page to page. Assume test with huge fields and little data in them as well as small fields and lots of data.

It is not just portals, oh and all the books i read say portals should work ok, they do on first page just fine, but onec anything spans more then one page, it is a problem.

Whatever.

If you want to attach a sample of your layout, I'll take a look at it.
