Changing passwords on served files

We are using server 5.5 on a windows 2000 network. Have a bunch of files servered out but need to change the passwords on one. Can't find the stupid manual anywhere and my IT guy is on vacation... is there a simple answer.

You can make live changes to the structure while the files are hosted but you need to be the only guest. No other clients allowed while you do it.

Safest method however is to take the files down. You don't want a network interruption while you're making structural changes...

Mkula:

To change passwords and password settings on 5.5, you'll have to take the file offline. I would take advantage of the situation & do the following, during a slow period (like lunch) or when nobody is using the system at all:

1. Back up all your files (run a scheduled backup).

2. Shut down FileMaker Server

3. Open the file(s) in question in FileMaker Pro and make your password alterations.

4. Quit FileMaker Pro.

5. Start FileMaker Server & check that all the necessary files have opened correctly.

Regarding exactly how to do #3 above:

Go to File -> Access Privileges -> Passwords...

Select the password in question, and you can delete it, or modify its privileges; else you can add another password. Note that you'll need to know a password which has full (admin) privileges in order to do this.

If you have any doubts about any of this, DON'T DO IT!
