Runtime application size

Featured Replies

I've spent 6 months redeveloping an FM6 application in 7. I'm glad I did. But, wow, the size of the runtime solutions! I'm ready to deploy runtime solutions to beta sites.

What was about an 8M install program in 6 has grown to 15M on a Mac and 24M on a PC. On the PC, I had to include the extensions 'Dictionaries' and 'English' which account for the extra 9M on the PC.

Am I missing something or does everyone experience this growth in the size of their install program? Is there anyway to avoid the dictionary extensions on the PC (I assume they're built in on the MAC since I don['t seem to need them on the MAC for the solution to work)? Or will I have a problem with dictionaries being missing when deploying to a MAC that does not have FM7 on it?

Since most of my users do not have access to high speed internet, downloading an update of my 7 solution will be a significant event that may take a couple of hours. Hardly what they will view as an improvement over the old version of my software (which could take 45 minutes as it was - often tying up their business phone line for that time.

I'm using install anywhere for MACs and install builder for PCs.

Any insight will be appreciated.

TIA

Runtimes are much bigger in v7, due to the increased size of the application itself. I'm not actually using an installer at all, I just distribute as .zip archives on both mac and PC. For a simple application, my zip files are ~10MB on either platform. You can remove all of the Dictionaries that you don't need and that will reduce the file size significantly. (I just kept the english ones, since I haven't designed this for multiple languages.)

Another thing to consider for updates is whether you need to distribute the entire application, or if you can just distribute the runtime files of the database. The updates will be much smaller that way.
