Virus protection with Windows2000\Filemaker Server

Featured Replies

Hello:

I am running Windows 2000 Professional and using Filemaker Server 5.

Can someone recommend a good virus protection software to use with this system. Ive been told that running programs other than Filemaker Server can degrade performance and was wondering what effect virus protection software has on system performance?

Any suggestions apprecatied?

Thank you

Jeremiah

Why, why, why? FileMaker recommends that you run server on a dedicated machine, with nothing else, not even a screen saver. Unfortunately, this rule is often broken.

There is no "good" virus protection software. They all degrade performance

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, you are telling me the same thing Ive heard. The reason why I am asking this question is because Ive got a virus on my server and need to remove it. I am also concerned about protecting it from future viruses.

So, again, I need to know if I can run a virus software and which one? I can live with a performance hit as long as the system remains stable.

thank again

Stop the FileMaker Server service(s) and run the anti virus software. Then remove the antivirus or at least it's live checking capability.

The real remedy is not in running anti virus software but in figuring out how the virus got there. If the FMS machine is dedicated and has no file sharing on it, it can't get infected (no mail is read on it and no virus can spread through file shares).
