Windows copy/paste in Kiosk mode

Featured Replies

In Kiosk mode, under Windows XP, when I give the user a text block to fill out, Cntl-C & Cntl-V (copy/paste) and similar keys are not recognized, and instead generate invalid characters. Is this another "limitation" of Kiosk mode?

(I am targeting Dacons Menu Control for a future release, but I'm about to ship this version.)

Thanks, Rick

Yes, Lorick, you have hit upon one of the down sides of Kiosk mode.

The idea of Kiosk mode is just that - a kiosk scenario where all OS features, menus, operations are taken away from the user.

You, as the developer have to provide, via scripting and interface, to the user anything you want to allow the user to do. If you don't program it in, they can't do it.

If you use the regular runtime, you can allow more functionality - like keyboard shortcuts - without having to recreate it in your interface. It is also less obtrusive on the user's machine.

Thanks for your response, DykstrL.

FileMaker Customer service swears up and down that these control key combinations word properly in Kiosk mode. When I challenged that, she said she's sure it's so, because she got the information from a "Senior Technical Support Agent". I'm almost convinced this is bum information. It's annoying.

My app does have buttons and scripts sufficient to support all the functions the user needs, and it is a reasonable self-contained interface. That part's OK. It would be so much more usable if FileMaker had a mode halfway between Kiosk and regular runtime. The runtime interface, with it's menus, etc., would confuse my user population. Menu Control is probably the answer - but for the next version.
