We built a form in FileMaker, but are having a font problem.

In some fonts, typing an apostrophe (') or quote (") in the browse mode gives a little rectangular box.

However, if those characters are typed in another application, then copied and pasted into FileMaker, they are fine!

Ever run into this problem?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.

Sincerely,

Michael Caroff

Generic suggestions: make sure your copy of FMP is updated to the latest patch. Download it from the FileMaker Inc web site. Ditto for the operating system.

Do a disk scan and look for errors.

Have you tried re-installing FMP?

Does it happen in other database files?

FileMaker has a preference to turn "smart quotes" on or off. These are the curly kind, ya know? My guess is that you have smart quotes on, but the application you are cutting and pasting from is giving you "dumb" quotes, so they work, because virtually every font contains straight quotation marks, but some fonts, like the one you're using, don't have curly quotes. Try a different font and/or turn off the smart quote feature.

it sounds like to me you are using a pc font on a mac which has it's encoding messed up. this is a common problem when using certain versions of microsoft fonts, as well as other pc fonts on a mac. "smart" quotes and commas, as well as things like "r" balls (registered symbol)are common characters to have this happen on. arial and impact are two fonts that do this commonly, as well as times new roman. try switching to a mac font like say new york to see if it fixes your problem, then try to find a newer version of the font you want to replace it with.
