July 28, 200520 yr FM 7, OSX Tiger Hi Helpers! I have a database that includes "Companies". Many of these are independent but some are related to each other as either a "Main Office" or a "Branch" location. I'd like to have a portal in each Company record that shows the Branches and Main Office with the Main Office highlighted or sorted at top. If the Company is independent, the portal can disappear (extra credit). Call this group a "Region." Can someone please put me on the right track? Ideally it is a solution that allows for easy data entry of the "Regions" Thanks in Advance.
July 28, 200520 yr Here's something like. I'm not showing the Main one in a portal, as there's only 1 per. The portal has a same-colored background. The "PrimaryFlag" and the "ParentCompanyID" are both auto-enter, with Replace, so they can clear the other. It seems to work, in my limited testing. You could go a bit further, and filter out the current CompanyID from the primary companies drop-down. That makes sense, but would further complicate the solution, so I left it out. July 29, 200520 yr Author Thanks for the very clean and simple solution. You make it look so easy. I'd like to also be able to see the "Sister" branches in the portal of a Company. I know that I could click to the parent and then see the Sisters but it would be easier if they were right there. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
July 29, 200520 yr Well, it's not hard to do. But we're taking up a fair amount of space with these portals. An alternative, which I neglected, was to put another button to go back to the main company, where you can see the sisters. The attached file has both. Another thing you may not have notices is that the label for the portal is inside another instance of the same portal; so no label if no portal records. Cheap trick -] CompanyBranches.zip
August 2, 200520 yr Author Hi Fenton, Thanks for your solution. Sorry I was a little unclear. I'm trying to get the branches and parent into one portal that has them both. I suppose that requires quite a different solution? When I have my one portal, I'll highlight the one that is the parent--I know how that's done. Cheers,
August 2, 200520 yr That's simpler in a way. But you have to create a calculation field with both the 2 IDs in a multi-line; so that it can match either. Looks like: CompanyID & CompanyBranches2.zip
