defining value lists

is there a script that if you have field "A" with a value list of "x,y,z" you can define a value list for field "B" out of a value lists "1,2, or 3" depending on what is chosen out of "x,y,z"?

Sounds like you want a 'conditional valuelist'. Do a search for the above in the valuelist forum, and I'm sure you'll get hits, as this is a commonly asked question.

i still can't find anything that actually tells me how to do it

Its not real clear exactly what you are looking for but attached is the basic structure for a conditional value list.
