IM function/plugin that will play alert sound on network without affection other user screens--activator does not seem to work.

I have a networked office program that visually alerts everyone that another computer or exam room is ready for the doctor. I would like a sound to also play to notify everyone of the change in status.

I have tried the activator plugin. However, I do not want to disturb the screen of the other networked computers as the sound is played. Activator plays a script from one of the served files--in a multifile system this often causes interuptions. Is there a way to do what I would like. Can someone custom program it for me?

how about sending them an email? Most email programs have non-intrusive notifier schemes that you could piggy-back on without having to do much coding at all...
