GarrettC Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I put myself down as an intermediate skilled FileMaker but I am for sure in the newbie funk. Despite some time with Filemaker and a deep history with scripting in a number of other apps FileMaker always manges to stump me. The hardest area for me to understand is the way scripts work with the interface objects. I bought a very good book from Que publishers, "Using FileMaker 7" but it is somewhat advanced for me in a lot of areas. The book states (page 264) that you can attach and trigger a script from any layout element but does not go into it. This where I am stuck because I can only see buttuns as doing that. My interface problem... I need to have an element that is a 2 option radio button, those values are in a short value list. When that element is clicked and an option is chosen that triggers the loading of another field of 1 of 2 different Value lists in a popup format so that the user can choose from that list. I am trying to avoid any further button pushing. A show/hide method is not going to work. I think part of the problem is that a number of things need to work togther so I don't know if I am close or really far away. Thanks for any guidance, I really need to get this interface stuff down.
SlimJim Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 You are looking at something known as a conditional value list. The normal thing is that the choosing of the first value sets up a relation which then distinguishes the second value list a sort of Category > Subcategory. There are numerous ways of doing this and I think the first step is to do a search on the forum for conditional value list and if that doesn't help come back with more specific details or even a bit of your file so that we can see exactly what you are trying to achieve.
GarrettC Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 Thanks! I will do just that, clearly another weakness is my vocabulary. I'll search the forums and my other information, even the book, proper phrase in hand. One other comment, I had done some fairly complex projects in 5 and 6 but it has been a t least a year or two since I have worked in FileMaker and I am blown away by the changes between 6 and 7, its like a different application.
