"I'm planning to learn a great deal myself," said Harum-Alvarez. "Chris' energy and talent will add a great deal to the class." Visibly reddening, Manton said, “ I’m honoured to share Albert’s stage. Everyone there, including me, is going to come away from this class buzzing. I’m really looking forward to it.” WHAT IS THE DESIGN MASTER CLASS? At a music conservatory, the Master Class is for advanced students, whose own projects become the class curriculum. That's the way it works with the Design Master Class, taught by Albert Harum-Alvarez and special guest Christopher Manton. Admission is by interview only, and requires that each student bring a database -- a 'master piece' -- to the class. That database will evolve and advance over three days, based on the principles discussed in class. Albert is principal of SmallCo.net, the firm that designed the starter databases that ship in the box with FileMaker Pro 6 and 7. SmallCo's clients include FileMaker, Inc., Time, Inc., Harvard University, Fidelity Investments, The New York Public Library, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and other small and large companies across North America and Europe. He has been a featured speaker at six FileMaker Developer Conferences. Chris has forgotten more about FileMaker graphic techniques than most of us ever knew. He's created integrated solutions in the USA and Europe for diverse businesses ranging from photography, dentistry, medical insurance repricing, a racetrack, movie truckers, an international aid organisation and even worked for an intelligence firm. At his company, BabelFix, he also consults directly to other developers, helping with interfaces and specialist feature sets. Chris has been a speaker at FileMaker DevCon, has trained for FileMaker International, and has presented at MacWorld and FSA meetings in the UK. Albert and Chris will present lectures in their inimitable but quite different styles, on design patterns, interaction principles and FileMaker design techniques. Topics include: FileMaker Habits to Break: Globals and More Single Schema File, Multiple Presentation Files FileMaker Gotchas: Yes, Even in 8! Interface Design Principles: A Short History BEFORE & AFTER: Extreme Makeovers, FileMaker-Style Every student presents their work to the class at least twice, on the first day and then again on the final afternoon. You will be amazed at the Extreme Makeovers! Each morning and afternoon contains a presentation tuned to the needs of the class at that point. The remainder of class time - and often the evenings, for students who can't stop - is devoted to the transformation of students' databases. Teams of developers often enjoy attending the class together, and can usually take their solutions much farther over the three days. Discounts may be available for multiple attendees from the same organization. WHY ATTEND THE MASTER CLASS? Here's a short list of reasons why you, the developer, may be a candidate for the design master class: The opportunities created by FileMaker Pro 8 are inspiring, but mind-boggling. You're wondering how to overhaul your tried-and-true approaches to database design. The interfaces you're designing aren't all you want them to be, and you'd like to know how to create the more professional look of a Windows, Macintosh or web app. You'd like to learn the principles of interface and interaction design, and see how they apply to web or desktop interfaces. Support and help desk issues are a worry for your application, and you'd like to see how good interaction design can reduce your support burden. You've realized that the efficiency gains that drive the adoption of technology come from good design more than from faster processors and hard drives. You want to see examples of interfaces that offer time savings as well as increased perspective on business processes. Elegance, in the design sense, is important to you, and you'd like to infuse that sense of elegance in your solutions, from the data structures all the way to the layout of screens.
