Hi,

I am having trouble with what I thought was a very simple lookup field.

I have a simple table with 2 fields that stores Machines and the number of production "heads" they have

Fields:

Machine (text)

Heads (text)

In a realated DB when input is made in the Machine field, it matches and pastes the data to the heads field of the related DB. Simple. Problem is, it only works half right. The company I work for has named all of the their machines like this:

131A

131B

132A

132B (etc)

When my DB does the lookup it is only seeing the first 3 numbers of the first occurence of a related record(s) and copies that "head" information over.

So if 131A is a 6 head

and if 131b is a 2 head

In my related DB if I type in 131b in the machine field, I get a return of 6 in the heads field.

I have tried these fields as text and numbers but neither way seems to matter.

On a related issue: I don't understand in FileMaker when I specifically search for 131A it also returns 131A and 131B. This is what clued me into the lookup problem. Even when I put an operator such as "=" in the lookup it is still retruning both records.

Have I done something fundamentally wrong here? Is this an issue with indexing? I had it tunred on now I am wondering if I shuld turn it off.

Any help....

Thanks,

Steve
