Another one about relationships...

Featured Replies

Relationships are a new concept for me, and I have just returned my FM 7 book in hopes of an FM8 release so, please bear with me...

I have created a database for guest lecturers.

I have 4 tables:

Guest Lecturers (Contact Information)

Seminars

Articles

Correspondence

It is a one to many relationship, so one guest lecuturer can have many seminars, many articles and many correspondences.

I just noticed that when I search for a guest lecturer, the seminars, articles, and correspondences do not match or change depending on the search.

Would it be possible for the search to be conducted over all layouts (tables), so that when I search for a specific guest lecturer, when I go to the seminars page it will also show me all of the seminars for that lecturer?

Thank you!

Calantha:

When you search in your Lecturers table, you are specifically not searching in the other tables. If you want to show that lecturer's related records in the other tables, you have two choices:

1. Script the find so that it goes through all the tables and finds your related records for you.

2. Create portals in your Lecturers layout to the other three tables. These would show ONLY the related records, and do not require a find to do so.

Thank you! I was wondering if it could be done with a script, I will try that out.

I knew I could do it with portals but eventually the information would be so much I think it wouldn't be efficient.

Thank you again.

I'm a little confused on how I can do this with a script... If you wouldn't mind giving me a little nudge in the right direction that would be lovely!

I think I might have found it.. "Go to related record..." Thanks.

I don't think this is a script operation really, unless you're talking about full text searches, which is a different thing. As Stanley said, the other tables' (files') records should all be related to the Lecturer. To go to any set of related records you just use the step Go To Related Record [relationship; show only related], and the layout where you want to see them (FileMaker 7).

You could see such short info as "titles" or dates in a portal. A click on a button IN the portal row with Go To Related Record [portal relationship; show only related] should take you directly to that related record.

Thanks for that tip about portal linking! It's working absolutely fantastic!
