Currently, I have a container field that contains file references.

If the user double-clicks on the container, the file reference opens the file (which is on a shared volume)..

My boss is lazy, and doesn't want to have to double-click. He wants to single-click. Is there some way I can write a script that will open the file automatically on single-click. Export Field Contents is not want I want.. I want to open the file reference.

You could set the field up as a button with a Go To Field (Select/Perform) with itself as the target field. As long as you are storing file references this will open the file. - To be more precise: in Windows XP that is the behaviour.

You can have it be a button. The script would just be a simple Go to Field but with the select/Perform option.

Many thanks!!! there is still one little problem. On my machine this works as it should. On my boss' machine (also filemaker 7.0v3 on a mac), for some reason when he clicks on any of the portal row records, it goes to the first portal row field.

On my machine, if I click on the record in the 3rd portal row, it goes to the appropriate field on the 3rd portal row, why then might it be going to the first row on another user's machine ?

any ideas ?

Is this solutions being hosted as Multi User?

If so, who is running the host copy or are you running FM Server?
