On OS X is a G4 500mhz a hard requirement for server 8 or just a suggestion? I have a 450mhz I want to put it on for a four user setup.

Sure it will work.

It will just be slow.

You're talking about spending nearly $2000 on software + all your time... Don't cheap out and put it on some POS you have lying around.

More than just the speed--consider the reliability of your system, etc.

If a brand-new G5 or XServe is too much dough, and a windows machine too much of PITA, you could look for an older G4 tower in the dual gigahertz range. Those are very solid performers.
