8 will not boot just like before

I now have the exact same problem that I had on 04-22-04 Post#102528 when I posted the following.

"I downloaded 7.0 demo and played with it until it timed out. I then purchased 7.0, put the disc in, doubled clicked the FMP icon, entered my name, company and the codes that came with it.

But when I try to open it or any 7.0 files. I get the message that 7.0 has timed out, just like it did with the demo. I trashed the demo before installing the new one. What gives?"

This exact same thing is happening again with 8 and FileMaker is no help. I've talked with 3 different reps at FileMaker and had the same result. It will not open!

I use a Mac running OSX 10.3.9

You guys have any ideas for me?

What was the solution you found for the problem in 7? I remember in 7 there was an invisible file/folder that one could delete, which removed the issue. Perhaps it's the same situation? Now, finding the item to delete... that's another thing entirely.

Hi Stanley,

The invisible file did it or was at least the start. As I remember I had to take the invisible file out twice (two 30 day periods) and everything worked fine after that. So it must have been the invisible file and a combination of other things I was told to do.

I just couldn't believe it happened again. I checked our other offices that have Macs and none of them have a problem and some have the same OSX and same Mac. It has to be something with my machine I guess, but that does not change the frustration level.

Hey Bill,

Did you get 8 to open? You are one of about 10 people I know having this problem, so please pass along anything you find out. It has to be something to do with an imbedded file by FileMaker when you first mount the 30 versions. That is the only thing that makes any sense to me. I thought it was only unique to Macs but I’ve had the question from some Pc users as well. Anyway, I’m not much help, just trying to follow the bouncing ball.

No, I'm getting nowhere! It's just don't understand why FileMaker can't help me. At least now I know that I'm not the only one with the problem. But it was the same thing with 7, if it weren’t for the forum I would still be using 6. I've spent a lot of man hours on this and I'm no closer than when I started. I should never have downloaded the 30 day version of FileMaker. I new when I did it I was making a mistake. But I did it anyway, smart ha!

I'm still trying to track down where I got the information from last time - regarding the invisible file/folder created by the 30-day trial of 7 which needed to be deleted to get the full version of 7 to work, in the hopes of finding the solution to this same problem in 8. If I get anywhere with it, I will post it up here.

I'm so mad I could spit! If I would have recorded all the conversations I had with FileMaker when I first had the trouble with 7. I could simply replay them because I get the same song and dance now! And they act like I'm the only one in the world having the trouble and I know that that is simply not true! Harry's message said it as well.

I know that FileMaker is not intentionally lying to me, but somebody at FMP has this information and is not passing it along for whatever reason. Maybe it's only $200.00 bucks, but I should be able to use the product. And my boss looks at me like I'm some kind of doofus! And he's right, but FileMaker doesn't need to help. I'm not sure without Stanley's help that I would ever been able to use 7!

Ok, so much for my sad tail, but if you guys come up with anything please give me a shout.

Have you tried deleting the file

/users/library/preferences/com.filemaker?:????

Also, try deleting the folder /users/library/preferences/filemaker.

Where is this hidden file you say causes the problems?? Could there be another mirror of it somewhere?

Thanks for your post. I took out the two folders you mentioned but there is no change.

When it happened with 7 the problem was an invisible file that for some reason would not clear. Stanley informed me of this file and that fixed the problem.

To date I've had 11 phone conversations with FileMaker and can still not run 8. It is truly and unbelievable situation and one that has caused me untold hours of grief and frustration. Having gone through it with 7 I think just makes the whole thing that much more unpleasant.
