mdroyal Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 I have posted earlier about why serverv5.5 will not run on Tiger, so I 've decided to try and get server v7, but was told that I'd have to upgrade all of my clients. Currently they are running on v6.x and I cannot afford to upgrade all of them. I cannot find anywhere that shows what version of Server will run versions of client. Does anyone know where I might find this, or if it is possible? Thanks, Mike
Wim Decorte Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Server 8 will run FM7 and FM8 clients Server 7 will run FM7 clients only Server 5.5 will run FM5, 5.5 and 6 clients. There never was a Server 6.
Reed Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 server 7 will run with FM8 clients, with a few caveats like the new search patterns or anything new that is explicitly evaluated on the server. Most of the other new features of 8 will work.
Wim Decorte Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 That's one big caveat... especially since there is no good documentation on what is evaluated on the server and what not. If you want to be safe, don't host files with FM8 features on FMS7.
Reed Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Well, I've been doing it for the past month with no problems... I just didn't want to wait for server 8 advanced to start using custom menus, better value lists, script variables and tab controls. All of these things seem to work well with server 7 as long as all of the clients are 8, and no 7 clients try to access the files (for example, they get a mess of crap for a layout with tabs)
Steven H. Blackwell Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Take a look at FMI TIL 5319 for some discussion of mixed version environments. Wim is correct in noting the safest procedure is not to mix. At least not to mix down from client 8 to server 7. We do not know with any certainty exactly what functions evaluate server side vrs. client side, and that is a critical piece of information. The help file information is not correct in some instances. Steven
