November 3, 200520 yr We've just upgraded to pro 8, and some of my users have started asking that their filemaker password be stored so they don't have to input it every time the start up. This is for Windows XP btw. I've had a look around but can't see where this is set. Any ideas?
November 3, 200520 yr What good is a password if the users don't have to use it? They can login as a guest without a password. FileMaker does not save the password, it saves a hashed version of the password. Hashing is a one way encryption.
November 3, 200520 yr Author I have lazy users, but they are all on password protected machines, so the security concerns are not THAT dramatic.
November 3, 200520 yr If you use the "authenticate by server" you don't need passwords. (i.e their login/password is their server authentication) Create a user group on your server for each level of filemaker accounts you have (i.e user, manager, administrator) and have them in order of authentication in filemaker. (i.e account is manager gets authenticated before operator)
November 4, 200520 yr You might take a look at the two tech Briefs on security and External Server Authentication found on the FMI web site: http://www.filemaker.com/support/upgrade/techbriefs.html We wrote them expressly to answer in detail questions such as the one you asked. HTH Steven
