Checking if a file is embedded

Hi,

I'm looking for a script technique or plugin that will allow me to do the following:

Check a container field to see if an image is embedded or stored as a reference. If it is embedded, export the image to a directory and change the container field to a reference.

We want to do this to older, out of use records to reduce file space.
