I have installed Filemaker Server 7 on a Windows XP machine. When on the machine, I am able to open remote and open the file. However, from any client machine I am unable to do this. I have made sure the databse is open, and that the user group has fmapp extended privilege on. The box do not display on open remote is not checked. I do not know if there's a conflict trying to run this on windows xp or if there's some other kind of network problem. also, i tried creating a new database and the same problem occurred. I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions.

Well first, don't try to run FMS and FMP on the same machine at the same time. You can toast your files that way.

Second, check that the WXP firewall is open for Port 5003. You may also have to enter its IP address in the remote client.

Wow, thank you so much for the advice, it worked like a charm. Maybe you'd be able to answer my other question... On a server, is it possible to run both Filemaker Server 5.5 and Filemaker Server 7 simultaneously? Or will they interfere with each other?

This is likely not going to work because they will fight over Port 5003. It's also not a good idea from the stability and performance perspective.

I realized I didn't give good information the last time I asked this question.

I am currently running Filemaker Server 5.5 on a Windows 2000 Dell Server hosting approx. 50 FMP6 databases. I am in the process of converting the databases into FMP7, and have loaded Filemaker Server 7 onto the Dell Server. I would like to, while transitioning, run the FMS5.5 and FMS7 simultaneously off the Dell Server. Right now, the Services for Filemaker 5.5 are open, as are the Filemaker Helper 7, but I cannot get the Filemaker 7 service to open. It gives me an Error 1003 message. Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks.

As I said this is not going to work. You can't run them both simultaneously.
