I haven't worked in FileMaker in a long time. I'm creating a database of contacts and have created a relationship to categories for each contact. I will use a portal as each contact may be under several categories.

Now...when I attempt to enter into the related field I get the message "This field cannot be modified until "category" is given a valid value."

This is likely something very simple that I'm just forgeting to do but I'm gettin' very, very frustrated trying to figure it out. Can someone help? I'm using FM5.0.

You didn't say what your relationship to categories is based upon. Until a value for the key field used in the categories relationship is entered into the contacts file, you won't be able to access any related fields (categories::field). What you probably want is a multi-key in the contacts file. This would be a text field used to connect contacts with categories. The "Key" field can contain multiple category keys separated by carriage returns.
