Newbies Kingleo2121 Posted December 23, 2005 Newbies Posted December 23, 2005 Hello everyone, I am not sure if this is the right forum but I am lost. :-( I want to use FileMaker to create a form for some staff to fill out at the school that I work at. They deal with the naughty kids and the staff need to keep an eye on them and not spend too much time entering data at the computer. I planned out a list type form in my mind and would like to know how to implement it. First, I have a database with student IDs, First Name, Last Name, Room Number, and Grade. Second, I want to keep track of students getting in trouble and for what reasons.Using popup menus with our schools discipline codes. Third, I want the first popup menu in the first row to be Grade, the second to be Room, and the third to be Name. If the 4th Grade is chosen in the first popup menu I want only the 4th Grade classrooms to be available in the second popup menu. Then when Room 411 is chosen, for example, I want all the students in that room to appear in the third popup menu. When the student is chosen I want their Student ID to automatically fill in. Fourth, I'd like a field that can be clicked on for time in and another for time out so the staff doesn't have to enter the time manually. Is this all possible? Can I get some direction? I've read the December updated White paper floating around and I just don't get it. I need to understand how to get the menus to work the way I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
CobaltSky Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Hello Kingleo2121, Welcome to the forums! You've certainly packed a number of questions into your first post. Answering each of them in turn and in an adequate level of detail would require rather a long response - especially since there are a number of different ways you might go about setting up a file to achieve the various things you've described. You may find it a more effective use of the forum (ie you may get more responses) if you ask your quyestions one at a time... : Rather than launch into a lengthy explanation, I am instead attaching a simple file which provides a working model of some methods that you might use to achieve the various things you've outlined. If you pull the file apart you should be able to get an idea of how it is set up, and hopefully it will give you a few ideas to work with. :wink2: Menus.zip
Newbies Kingleo2121 Posted December 23, 2005 Author Newbies Posted December 23, 2005 Sorry, I didn't want anyone to think i was being too demanding, or taht I wanted it done for me. I will look at you document and ask anymore questions I might have. One at a time of course. :-P This is very nice of you. :-) Thank you. P.S. Is this forum okay with posting files from new users? I woulkd like to submit mine for review if I'm allowed or if anyone is interested.
CobaltSky Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Sorry, I didn't want anyone to think i was being too demanding, or taht I wanted it done for me. No problem. But you will find that the forum works well when you ask a series of quick questions (rather than one huge one). That's because there are lots of people online who can shoot of a few quick answers now and then. But there's not so many who can invest an hour or two in writing a three-page reply, so the questions that require three-page replies are the ones that sometimes go unanswered... : I will look at you document and ask anymore questions I might have. Great. Whether you post back to this thread, or start a new thread, I'm sure that folks will be happy to offer comments or suggestions.
