tc2468 Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 Has anyone ever tried opening files on a network drive (raid 5 nas) from FM Server ver 3? Clients will still open from the G4/os8.6/FMS3 host but the server files reside on the network storage. any comments? performance over gigbit ethernet? maybe a better solution would be to build raid on the G4.

tc2468 Posted December 28, 2005 Author Posted December 28, 2005 ok maybe this wouldnt be a good route. could NAS be viable with the newer versions of FMPro server? Is server v3 dangerous in itself if run properly? Ive been running biege g3 333mhz, os 8.6 server v3 for 9 years (30 fmpro 4.1 crossplatform users / 25DB's) with minimal problems
Steven H. Blackwell Posted December 29, 2005 Posted December 29, 2005 (edited) You'll get the best results from having the data files on the same CPU as the Server daemon/service. Server 3 is so far out of date that I can't even comment on it. The Server Tech Brief on the FMI web site has a lot of information you can review: http://www.filemaker.com/support/upgrade/techbriefs.html Steven Edited December 29, 2005 by Guest
Wim Decorte Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 NAS is really meant for files that need to be available as shared on the network. That doesn't apply to FM files, they should not be shared, only FMS should have access on them. While NAS performance/stability can get close to Hard disk performance, it's not there yet so putting your files on it adds a level of vulnerlability. A secondary risk is that if you put your files on the NAS, the OS sharing settings may result in the FMS files being shared in ways that are not by design...
