I have a database with 7 fields. 6 are text, and 1 is a number. This number field has the job cost as a decimal. If I search this database I get about 70 results back on average... how can I have filemaker sum all cost fields for the search result?

Summary Fields do this for you.

So I add another field and set it to summary instead of text?
