We are running FM Server 7 on a VPN with 2 users in remote locations using FM Pro 8 to access the files on the server.

After approx 45 minutes of being connected and working in the files, FM Server appears to be diconnecting the users. This occurs whether they are adding data to the files or just browsing, so it does not appear to be an idle timeout issue. The VPN connection is still active when it occurs, so it seems to be Filemaker related.

Can anyone please advise if there are any settings that we can change to stop this?

Thanks

I would like to know more about this issue - specifically a solution because I am wanting to set up users to work over a VPN connection as well.

Just some questions that might help:

Does it happen if only one user is connected via VPN or is it specific to when a number of users are using seperate VPN connections?

Is the VPN connection using the same security logon credentials that the system would if he was physically connected to the network?

Good luck with your findings!

Hi Matt,

it is happening when 1 user is logged in and when more than 1 user is logged in. The logins are the same as when the users are connected in the LAN.

The problems don't occur when the users are logged in on the LAN, just through the VPN, however they can still access the other non FileMaker services through the VPN after they have lost the FileMaker connection.

Hi,

I also interested in feeback here as we are also experiencing problems with one user connected remotely with VPN. We have only one user setup that way, so I don't have anything else to compare to. I saw on a different thread that people suggest using Remote Desktop as it is more effcient (sending only the key strokes). Does that mean dedicating a PC just for that function?

We have been having issues with VPN, I know it is not our FM server since no one else is experiencing crashes. Something else out there that is more reliable? Or are there some settings in VPN to be setup?

VPN just builds a secure tunnel between the remote user and your internal network. It does not speed things up (in fact it probably slows down some).

For speed, using Remote Desktop is a whole lot better. But not necessarily as secure as VPN.

There is a newer version of VPN since we installed it 4 months ago, I was told it is more stable. If it does improve, I'll post again.
