djc728 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) Hello: I need to update some FM 5 files running under FM 5 Server. Could someone give me some insight into the best way to make these updates? I dont really want to log on to the production version and make the corrections their. I was wondering what others due when updating thier systems. I was thinking of the following: (1) logout all the users (2) backup all the production files (3) Login as admin and export the records from the files i'll be modifying. (4) Take my working copy of the files with the modifications and place into the production folder. (5) import the records into the new modified files. (6) Test the new modifcations Any one have any other procedures they use to modify FM5 files. Thanks. Dom Edited January 13, 2006 by Guest
janedoe Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 hi, there are obviously different ways you can go about this... i imagine your users will want to continue modifying and adding to the existing records in your file/s, so... once you have finished making the modifcations, and testing them with the existing data set you have in your development copy of the files: 1. make a copy of the files being served 2. replace the files being served with a clone of your development files 3. import data into your development files from the previously hosted files. djc728 Posted January 13, 2006 Author Posted January 13, 2006 Jane: Thank you very much. I wish the export would go quicker. This application I'm working on has 907 fields and only 6000+ records but the export is taken over 15 hours already and still going as I'm typing this. LOL I miss 4D sometimes. D-
gdurniak Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 (edited) 907 fields and 6000 records should not take 15 hours to export make sure you are exporting ONLY date, time, text, and number fields. If you accidentally select a summary field, or a calc based on a related field, it will take forever also, export as type "merge". You can then import using "matching field names" Edited January 13, 2006 by Guest
djc728 Posted January 13, 2006 Author Posted January 13, 2006 Gregory: I completely forgot about the summary & calculation fields. I'm banging my head against the wall as we speak. The differences between Filemaker and 4D BUT I love Filemaker. Thanks I owe you one! Dom
