Righto... i've never thought about this properly right... lets say im at home and ive got a copy of filemaker... filemaker server is hosted at work right... assuming the proper ports are open... can i just connect remotly to the server and file without needing fm server advanced?

cheers, genx

Yes, FileMaker Server can host to FileMaker clients on a WAN. However, you should ensure security of the server with a firewall or VPN.

Cheers, ummm, would that involve using ldap or something... or just directly connecting to the server and port... the reason i really ask lol is cause i dont really know where the ummm... default port setting is in filemaker server admin...

cheers, genx

There are no port settings in FMS admin. FMS uses the default port 5003 for data traffic.

The port setting needs to be done on the router that connects your office LAN to the internet. On that router port 5003 needs to be open and forwarded to teh LAN IP address of the FMS machine.

From home you need to use your office's web IP address in FMP. The router in the office will receive the request on port 5003 and dutifully pass it on to your FMS machine.

I'm being asked by my IT person (trying to connect a client from a VA hospital to our hosted database)}:(

What fields are being passed across the internet connection and what encryption we are using....?

How would I respond; I'm trying to convince him to open port 5003 at the hospital to connect to our server machine at our office. Isn't it true that port 5003 has to be open at "both ends" (client and host)?

Client uses a dynamic port. Port 5003 is on the server. FM7/8 can use SSL encryption if you enable that option on FMS. I suggest you visit www.filemakersecurity.com and get the excellent book by Steven Blackwell.
