Sharing via internet connection

Featured Replies

Can FM7/8 Network sharing be configured to to allow file sharing via an internet connection? Can I access a shared file from a host that is connected to the internet?

Yes you can. But not through OS file sharing. The host needs to have the file open and shared in FM. The router on that end needs to be configured to forward FM traffic (port 5003) to the internal IP address of host machine.

The client opens his FMP, enters the web IP address of the remote location (not the internal IP address of the host machine) and away you go.

Thanks,

How do I determine the web IP address.

Can this also be done in FM 6?

The router config pages will tell you your web IP address.

It can be done in FM6 too, but it will be terribly slow. Depending on how your solution is built it may be too slow.

Question, apologize for jumping in so late.

Are you trying to use a shared database from the FM "fat" client installed on the desktop through the "Open Remote" process? Can it be accessed this way? How would it be done?

William, just to be absolutely clear about this, are you saying it is possible to share remotely without the server software? This was not possible with FM5, 5.5 as I recall. I did not think it was possible with FM 6 so I would be delighted to hear that it is possible with FM 7 or 8 keeping in mind that you would be limited to only 5 total users. Let us know. Thanks.
