February 8, 200619 yr Newbies Hello, I am a FileMaker beginner--we are a nonprofit in Boston and our FM designer is currently in San Francisco. He made modifications to our FM files over an FTP online system. He had to use a FM version 8, while we run on FM version 7. When I reinstalled the new files into our server system, the office was able to read the files...but not modify them. When the FM server is connected we get an error message that reads "FM cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using FM Pro on this computer." When the FM server is stopped, we are able to read and modify the files on the server computer--but no where else. Please help! Thank you--Kristen
February 8, 200619 yr how are you opening files from the server? Do you browse through the folders to the files and then double-click them?
February 8, 200619 yr Kristen: It sounds to me like you've got both FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server running on the same box, and that the files are already open in FileMaker Pro. If so, shut down FMServer, quit FMPro, then restart FMServer to open the files. While everything is down, make sure the permissions are set so that FileMaker Server can modify the files. To echo Wim's question - make sure that users are accessing the files via FMS (meaning via "Open Remote...") rather than via the OS. -Stanley

February 8, 200619 yr Author Newbies Stanley, Firstly, thanks for your help! I did shut down FMServer and quit FMPro, and then I restarted FMServer. How do I check to see if the settings are so that FileMaker Server can modify the files?
February 8, 200619 yr In the Finder, select the file, go to File->Get Info... and under "Ownership & Permissions" check to see that the group "fmsadmin" has full access to the file. This should automatically be set this way, but moving files from one machine to another can change this stuff. If you have a lot of files being accessed, you can select the folder which they reside in, and do all the enclosed items as a batch. For more info, check page 40-42 of the FileMaker 7 Server Admin guide. -Stanley
