You have both, but perhaps not with the connection to scripting you would wish for ...but don't forget CF and ordinary calcfields.

The second is native validations, that runs when a layout is committed.

Dacons (www.dacons.net) just anounced Scriptfire which looks kind of interesting, since it supports firing scripts based on various time intervals and settings as well as leaving fields, and other events.
