Is there any way to create an input mask so that the person doing data entry doesn't need to put in the parentheses or hyphens in a phone number?

I saw that it can be done with Custom Functions, but there's no way I can justify FM8 Advanced.

You don't need a custom function for this, unless you're doing something sophisticated, like letting the user specify the format. Just define the field to auto-enter the formula, replacing existing value. See here for a possible formula.
