Creating Runtime Applications

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded to FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced for use in my workplace. The goal was for me to design databases for coworkers, without them needing FileMaker themselves. Hense, the usage of the Developer tool.

I've read through the guide several times and keep hitting a brick wall. I can design a database use Developer and create a Runtime application, no problem. I've been able to open the databases on other computers as well. However...once I open it, I can't do anything with it! I get an error message saying that I can't modify the database. Hmm. I have a feeling it's something very obvious that I'm simply overlooking, but I can't find the answer. What am I missing? How do I develop a stand-alone database that can be modified, once it's on another computer?

Welcome to the Forums.

Check the OS-level permissions on the file - it may be that you've got it set to only be modified by you.

Stanley,

Thanks for your prompt reply!

Okay...maybe I should have said "novice" instead of "intermediate!" I know where to set file access privileges (I have the default set to full access), but don't see where it specifies OS differences. I look under "File." Am I in the wrong spot?

In the Finder, click once on the file and then go up to File->Get Info... (or hit command-I). You'll see "Ownership & Permissions" about two-thirds of the way down the resulting window. You should set it so that everyone has read & write access. This may not actually be the problem, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

Ahhhh- makes sense! My brain was in another world.

I'm at home now, but will look at it again tomorrow. Thanks - I'll post then, telling what happened.

Okay....I tried it again this morning. Stanley, you were right - it was a permissions problem that was so very easy to fix. I hadn't even thought of that. THANK YOU! I transfered the file to another computer and it ran splendidly. :P

So glad I found this forum.

DM:

Glad to have been able to help.

I don't know how much help I can be but several years ago (I am on a mac) I created some FM solutions for runtime so I could share them - Of course FM is a lot newer now but I thought that once you put it in runtime it can't be modified and that is what you want.

If I did need to make a change because something wasn't working then I had to enter the password in order to open it.
