K1200 Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Can unused dictionaries be removed from the FileMaker Pro program directory itself before building a runtime, so that they don't show up in the resulting runtime file set at all? I've been deleting them "after the fact" to reduce the size of my built runtime. But would there be a problem with doing it once an for all? I thought I would ask before trying a trial and error approach. Thanks.
Reed Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 I could give you an answer, but It would be based on a trial and error approachcomment>
Reed Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 OK, I actually checked, and if you take the unwanted dictionaries out of the "FMI Runtime Resources" folder, and then make a runtime, the removed dictionaries are not there. At least that's where the files are on the Mac, I don't have a windows machine at home, so you'll have to test that yourself.
K1200 Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 Thanks for the test result. Since it worked for you, I'll try it on XP soon. It's only that I'm stacked up about 20 deep with "things to try" that I thought I would ask. Plus, I figured it might help others to know one way or the other. I'll post my results.
melmitts707 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 I am using FMP8 on WinXP w/SP2. I built a runtime solution, deleted all the language subdirectories and dictionary files except for English, built the setup with INNO Setup. It installs and runs fine.
K1200 Posted February 26, 2006 Author Posted February 26, 2006 Yes, that's what I've been doing. What I want to do now is remove them at the FMP level so that each built runtime is ready to use.
K1200 Posted May 26, 2006 Author Posted May 26, 2006 Follow up information: Yes, unused dictionaries and language packs can be removed from the FMP Runtime Resources directory (in the FileMaker program directory) prior to building runtimes on Windows machines. The resulting runtimes are approximately 25 megabytes smaller.
