Getting a summary field

I get nothing on this when searching so either it can't be done, or it's so simple, it's a no-brainer.

Can I have a report with a grand summary and put the results automatically into another field on another layout? This must be possible, yet I cannot find this in the manual or an example somewhere. The summary totals are just the points accumulated by racers over the season, but because there are so many classes for the racers, a simple total field is not how I want to manage the file.

hello, you could pobably script such an action, but it is probably better to define what exact reports you need and then make one report for each main criteria. can you explain better what you need to accomplish?

I have a bunch of racing teams made up of individual racers, or just individual racers. The data for each racer is their placing and a simple calc for points in each race. Some racers only compete in one class while others compete in several. The report is sorted by racing team and the individuals points are totaled with the teams points totaled and the total points in that class totalled through the summary field. It is the summary field that I'm interested in as instead of creating another report, I'd like to just grab the results and put them into another layout. I guess the other way to do it is to duplicate the summary layout and delete all the parts that I do not want from the intial layout. It would be nice to have the data without hitting preview or exporting it into excel or creating another report with more fields. It doesn't make sense that summary data generated through a report cannot be easily ported into another field, but then again, you could just create the field couldn't you? sorry for rambling...I know how to solve it, just frustrated that the result of the summary field is a dead end or not easy to 'get'.

now I get it. Could someone not have just typed, 'getsummary' for a newb/novice? Yes, advice is free and only if you've got a minute to give it. Thanks to overrider for the help.
