I am designing a soccer club database. It is structured to have only active data, in other words, the teams for this year will have the same players as a default for next year's teams, and will be edited accordingly.

That means that there will be no history of the teams from previous years. What is the regular approach in this case? Is all the information exported to another table/ excel sheet at the end of the season/ year? Is it an automated script that the user can perform, or is usually done by the db administrator/ developer? Any other ideas that might be practical?
