Import Summary miscalculating

I have 743 records that are match imported with another file which also has 743 records.

I have selected:

-Update matching records in found set

-Add remaining data as new records

The import performs with no problem but the "Import Summary" window that shows after the import states that 22718 records were updated or modified.

Has anyone had this problem with FM8Adv_v2?

Is it true that matching fields only match the first twenty (or so) characters?

I set up a new match field that was less lengthy than the original which was a filepath-type result and the problem went away.
