I am using FM7 and and am new to it. I created a very simple database and am entering upc codes in a numbers field. After I enter the UPC code, the numbers automatically change and all the upc fields end with the string "e+09" If I click on the field, the numbers will display as I inputted them, but will change back as soon as I click away. Is this some sort of indexing thing? I just want to be able to recheck my numbers without having to click on each field.

Your big number is getting converted to scientific notation. Select the field in Layout mode, choose Number... from the Format menu, and set it to leave data formatted as entered.
