You cannot create a portal with a blank first line. However if you turn on the "Allow creation of related records" for the relationship, then any portal based on that relationship will have a blank row as the LAST row in the portal.

If you really want to enter new portal data into the first row instead of the last, you can do it, and with FileMaker 5 it's pretty easy.

First turn off the "Allow creation of related records" in the relationship definition. As Kurt mentioned, this is what gives you the blank row.

Second, have a field in your related database that is set to auto enter a serial number. You may already have this.

Third, set the relationship to sort by that auto entered serial number field in descending order.

Lastly, create a script with a button near the portal to create a new record in the related database. The new record will have the highest serial number, and will therefore appear at the top of the portal ready for entry.
