is it possible to just import a table of contents of a network drive (I do not want to import the files, just the file names and paths)?

I know it's possible to import file references for images and text files - but how about any other file types (pdf, xml,...)?

You need Windows scripting to do this. Check out the demo file for the VBscript plugin at http://www.grokittools.com. The very first VBscript in that demo file does what you want to do.
