is there a way to replace the buttons with custom buttons or arrows?

A good starting point for exploring FMP interface techniques can be found here:

You can paste a graphic (preferrably a .png for compatability) directly onto the layout.

Select it and usethe menu command: Format/Button Setup... and assign a function or a script to it.
