Hi, not sure if this is in the correct forum, but please help:

We have been using Filemaker 6 to learn FM and are upgrading to FM8 this week.

My problem is that I want to assign client specific abbreviations plus job numbers i.e. RFS001, RFS002 etc. and ROT001, ROT002 etc.

Am I able to do this with FM6, or is there a much easier way to do this with FM8? I am aware how to set up a field to identify consequtive job numbers but so far I am unable to introduce the client unique job numbering.

Any help very gratefully received and I'm sure I'll be asking more!!!

Many thanks.

To expand on sbg2: you don't need these codes to work in FM. Use FM's relational capabilities to link records together via truly unique serial numbers. While it is true you are linking Customer 4536284 with Invoice 868363065, it doesn't really matter to the end user, since you only display to them that this is John Smith's order from January 17, 2004.

If you REALLY want those codes, you can create calculation fields that would display the sort of human-readable codes you want.
