We have FMS 7 installed on Windows Server 2003 for Small Business. The server has been specially configured for security to meet HIPA requirements. It has two NIC cards, one to an internal network and one to the internet. IIS is being used for web serving. I did not set this up and do not have much knowledge of it, being a Mac person.

I am able to access the database being hosted directly with FileMaker client without a problem. When accessing through the web I can see the list of databases but when I click to access a database a dialog box appears asking for a user name and password. Unfortunately the accounts in the database are not accepted. I have enabled a guest account that does not require a password in the database but am still not able to gain access.

The dialog box seems a little odd. The wording is different from what is generated by FMS 8 that I have running on a Mac. I am unclear as to whether this dialog is being generated by FMS or by the Windows server. The wording of the dialog is:

Prompt

Enter username and password for"" at

User Name:

Password:

There is no option to choose a guest account.

Is anybody running FMS 7 on Windows Server 2003 who could compare this wording to what you see from your server?

Thanks for any assistance you can offer. This is way outside my expertise.

I cover all this in FileMaker Security: The Book; the combinations are somewhat complex.

FileMaker Server 7 Advanced uses implicit Guest Access; FileMaker Server 8 Advanced uses explicit Guest Access.

In the FileMaker Pro file that you wish to share for IWP, enable the fmiwp extended privilege bit for the Privilege Set assigned to the Guest Account. The file will then open automatically with that Account's privileges.

You may find this is not what you really wanted to do. So then, you have 2 choices: change to FileMaker Server 8 Advanced where you can select either the Guest Account or a credentialed Account or design a customized log-in page for use with FileMaker Server 7 Advanced.

BTW, if you are using External Server Authentication those credentials will work with IWP; you will not however have single sign on.

I forgot to add that your using a non-supported Server OS. Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition is the certified server version.

Thanks for your response on this Steven. I can not use guest access in the final version but was just turning it on temporarily as part of testing this. My core issue is that I can't get any access to this database through IWP. So, is the best path to achieving this moving to Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, FMS 8 Advanced, or both?

Theresa

If you want to stay within support parameters, you have to move to the Standard edition. But that alone will not fix your problem.

How's your IIS set up to handle authentication?
